GTA 6 File Size: What's Known & How Much Space to Clear

Preload opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026. The preload page covers the download itself; this page is about the space it needs.

The short answer: not published

As of the update date at the top of this page, Rockstar has not stated how large Grand Theft Auto VI is, and neither platform store lists a size. The official site, the Newswire pre-order announcement and the Rockstar Support edition article all describe what you get and how you buy it, and none of them give a figure in gigabytes.

We do not publish an estimate, because an estimate dressed up as a fact is exactly what this site exists to avoid. Numbers circulating on social media are extrapolations from other games, not information from Rockstar.

Where the real number will appear first

You will almost certainly see it from one of three places, and usually in this order:

1. The platform store listing. The PlayStation Store shows a file size on a game’s page once the build is submitted, and the Microsoft Store shows an approximate size. Both tend to appear before Rockstar mentions it anywhere.
2. The preload itself. From November 12 the download queue on your console shows the exact amount coming down.
3. Rockstar Support. The edition article is where Rockstar has put practical launch details so far, so it is the most likely home for an official figure.

We check all three every day until launch. The moment one of them lists a size, this page updates with the number and its source.

Why a boxed copy does not help

The natural way to dodge a huge download is to buy the disc. For this game there is no disc. Rockstar Support describes the boxed Standard Edition as a download code, and lists no boxed Ultimate Edition. So the storage requirement is the same for everyone, and so is the download. The one advantage of a boxed copy is that it can be preloaded like a digital one once the code is redeemed. Our editions guide walks through what each version includes.

How to check your free space

PlayStation 5: Settings, then Storage. The Console Storage view shows what is used by games, media and saved data, and lets you delete or move items from the same screen.

Xbox Series X|S: My Games and Apps, then Manage, then Storage Devices. Each drive shows its free space, and selecting a drive lets you uninstall or move games.

Write the free number down. When the official size appears, you will know in ten seconds whether you have a problem.

Clearing room without regret

• Move, don’t delete. Both consoles let you shift games to a USB drive for storage. You cannot play PS5 or Series-optimised titles from USB, but copying them back later is far faster than downloading again.
• Start with the biggest thing you have not opened in months. The storage screens sort by size for exactly this reason.
• Leave headroom for the update. A launch-window patch is common in this industry, and Rockstar has not said whether there will be one. A margin above the listed size is cheap insurance.
• Expansion is an option, not a requirement. PlayStation 5 accepts an M.2 SSD in its expansion slot; Xbox Series consoles use an official expansion card. Neither is necessary if your internal drive has room, and we have no reason yet to say it will not.

What we will not do

We will not guess the size, and we will not repeat someone else’s guess with a “reportedly” in front of it. The gap between an estimate and the truth is where launch-day storage problems come from. When Rockstar or a platform store publishes the figure, it goes here with a link, and the update date changes to match.
