GTA 6 Preload: Date, Time & How to Download Early

Use the launch planner to save the preload date to your calendar and tick off the rest of your prep.

The preload date

Rockstar Support gives one preload date for Grand Theft Auto VI: November 12, 2026, at local midnight, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That is a full week before the announced release date shown at the top of this page, which is a longer window than most console launches offer. Rockstar has not published a separate preload date for either edition, and it has not published a preload size.

Everything else on this page is either how that date works in practice or an honest note about what has not been said.

What “local midnight” means

Rockstar’s wording is simply local midnight. In practice, console preloads generally become available when the clock in your region passes midnight on the listed date, so players in New Zealand see it before players in California. What Rockstar has not spelled out is whether “local” follows the region your console is set to or the country of your store account. For most people those are the same thing. If yours are different, for example because you buy from another country’s store, read the support article on November 11 rather than trusting a rule of thumb.

Boxed copies preload too, once the code is redeemed

This catches people every launch. Rockstar Support describes the boxed Standard Edition as a download code, not a disc, and lists no boxed version of the Ultimate Edition at all. Our editions guide has the full comparison.

That has two consequences for preload day:

• A boxed copy does not save you the download. The full game still comes down over your connection.
• Preloading only works once the code is redeemed on your account. If your box arrives on launch day, you cannot preload from it. If it arrives early, redeem it early and the preload appears in your library like any digital purchase.

Check the country printed on a download code before you buy a boxed copy from abroad. Codes are sold for a specific store region.

Preload is not early access

A preloaded game is a locked game. The files sit on your console until the release moment, and that moment is a separate announcement Rockstar has not made yet. No per-region unlock schedule has been published, and no edition has been announced with early access. Our release time page tracks exactly that question and explains what to expect once Rockstar does publish it.

How to preload on PlayStation 5

1. Pre-order digitally, or redeem your download code under Settings, then Users and Accounts, then Redeem Code.
2. From November 12, open your Game Library and find Grand Theft Auto VI under Your Collection.
3. Choose Download. If the option is not there yet, midnight has not passed in your region or the store has not refreshed. Restarting the console forces a library refresh.
4. Leave the console in rest mode with downloads enabled if you want it to finish overnight.

How to preload on Xbox Series X|S

1. Pre-order digitally, or redeem your code from the Microsoft Store’s Redeem section.
2. From November 12, open My Games and Apps, then Full Library, then All Owned Games.
3. Select Grand Theft Auto VI and choose Install. Pre-ordered games sometimes start automatically if automatic downloads are switched on in Settings.
4. Instant-on power mode lets the download continue while the console is off.

Make room before November 12

A preload fails silently if there is no space, and you may not notice until launch morning. Rockstar has not published an install size, so we cannot tell you a number, but our file size page explains where the figure will appear first and how to clear space on each console without deleting anything you will miss.

What we will update here

This page states only what Rockstar has published. When Rockstar or the platform stores publish the install size, an unlock schedule or any change to the preload window, this page changes the same day and the update date at the top moves with it. If you spot a claim elsewhere that contradicts this page, send it through our submission form and we will check it against the source.
