GTA 6 Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S and the PC Question

The confirmed launch platforms, what has never been announced, and an accurate record of how long Rockstar's last three PC ports actually took.

Release date: on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — per Rockstar Games' announcement and subject to change.

The confirmed list

PlayStation 5. Xbox Series X|S. That is the whole list, and it has not changed since Rockstar’s first announcement post in December 2023. It was repeated when the game was delayed, repeated in the pre-order announcement, and repeated on the closing cards of the official videos.

When pre-orders opened, the storefronts that took them were the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store, the Rockstar Games Store and physical retail. There was no PC storefront listing, because there is no PC version to list.

What has never been announced

It is worth being blunt about the negative space, because a lot of pages elsewhere are vague about it on purpose:

  • PC — no date, no window, no storefront, no system requirements.
  • PlayStation 4 and Xbox One — never on the list.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 — never mentioned by Rockstar in connection with this game.
  • Cloud streaming — no announced version for any cloud service.
  • Mac, Linux, handheld PCs — nothing announced, and these would depend on a PC build existing first.
  • VR — nothing announced.

If any of that changes, it changes here first and on the release date page.

Performance, resolution and frame rate

We are not going to give you numbers, because Rockstar has not given anyone numbers.

Rockstar has said that the extended look was captured in-game on PlayStation 5, and that Trailer 2 was captured in-game on PlayStation 5 as well. Neither statement is a performance-mode announcement. No target frame rate, no output resolution, no graphics/performance mode split, no ray-tracing feature list and no PS5 Pro enhancement has been published. Any specific figure you see quoted today traces back either to someone counting frames in a compressed video — which measures the video, not the game — or to nothing at all.

This page will carry those specs the day a platform holder or Rockstar publishes them, and not before. The same standard applies across the site: see how we handle the map size question for the identical reasoning applied to a different number.

The PC question, with the actual history

The honest answer to “will there be a PC version” is: Rockstar has not said, and Rockstar has historically not said until quite late. What we can do accurately is lay out how long the last three comparable gaps really were.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Console release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360: 29 April 2008. Windows release: 2 December 2008 in North America. Gap: about seven months.

Grand Theft Auto V

Original console release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360: 17 September 2013. Re-release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One: 18 November 2014. Windows release: 14 April 2015, after two publicly announced delays from an originally stated earlier date. Gap from original launch: about nineteen months. Gap from the current-gen-of-the-day re-release: about five months.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Console release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One: 26 October 2018. Windows release: 5 November 2019, announced by Rockstar on its own Newswire in October 2019, initially through the Rockstar Games Launcher and the Epic Games Store, with Steam following in December 2019. Gap: a little over twelve months.

What the pattern does and does not tell you

Three data points, spread from seven to nineteen months, with different console generations, different launcher strategies and different business conditions behind each one. That is a pattern in the loose sense that PC versions did eventually happen, and it is not a pattern in the sense of predicting a date. Anyone converting those three numbers into a specific month for this game is guessing, and we would rather say so than dress a guess up as analysis.

There is one further data point worth knowing for calibration: the original Red Dead Redemption from 2010 did not reach PC at all until a dedicated port in October 2024, more than fourteen years later. Rockstar’s back catalogue is not uniformly “PC eventually, about a year later.”

Physical, digital and pre-orders

Both a digital and a physical product exist. The practical detail worth knowing before you order is that the physical edition is not a traditional disc — it ships as a code in a box. There are two editions rather than the usual three-or-four tier structure, and Rockstar did not produce a collector’s edition. Prices, edition contents and the pre-order bonus are all covered on the price, editions and pre-order guide.

Single-player at launch

Rockstar has described this as a single-player experience. No online mode, no co-op and no successor to GTA Online has been announced for launch day, and no name or date has been given for one afterwards. Widespread expectation is not the same thing as an announcement, and we treat it accordingly in the FAQ.

Where to go next

If you are here deciding what to buy, the pre-order guide is the useful page. If you are here because you play on PC, that guide is written for you. And if you are just here to look at the world, start with the interactive map, the locations index or the regions of Leonida.

Frequently asked questions

What platforms is GTA 6 launching on?

PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar named those two platforms in the December 2023 announcement and has repeated them in every official post since, including the pre-order announcement. No other platform has been added.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC?

Not announced. Rockstar has never given a PC release date, window, storefront or system requirement for this game. Take-Two's CEO has spoken about PC mattering more to the company over time, which is encouraging but is not an announcement of a port.

Will GTA 6 run on PS4 or Xbox One?

No. Last-generation consoles are not on the platform list and never have been. Rockstar announced the game as a current-generation title from the first Newswire post onward.

Is there a Nintendo Switch 2 version?

Not announced. Rockstar has not mentioned Switch 2 in connection with this game at any point, and there is no pre-order listing on Nintendo's storefront.

Does GTA 6 support cross-play or cross-progression?

Not announced. Rockstar has described the game as a single-player experience, and no cross-play, cross-save or cross-progression feature has been detailed for launch.

Is it a timed PlayStation exclusive?

No. It launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day. Rockstar has run PlayStation-flavoured marketing language around the extended look, but marketing emphasis is not exclusivity, and Rockstar has never described any Xbox delay.
