Rockstar has never published a GTA 6 map area figure. Here is the one official comparison that does exist, and how to judge every number you see.

Key facts
- Rockstar has published no area figure for Leonida — no square miles, no square kilometres, anywhere in its own material.
- One official comparison exists. Rockstar’s co-head of development told an August 2026 creator preview that the map is about twice the size of GTA 5’s and three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, with the city itself around twice the size of Los Santos.
- That is a comparison, not a measurement. It was reported by outlets including VGC and Kotaku; it does not appear on Rockstar’s site.
- Rockstar never published a figure for GTA 5 either. The numbers people quote are player measurements taken after release.
- Community GTA 5 measurements range from roughly 48 to 81 km² depending on what is counted — a community estimate, not a Rockstar number.
- Density is the more useful variable before launch, and it is the one official material actually shows.
The short answer
Rockstar Games has not published a map size for Grand Theft Auto VI. No square miles, no square kilometres, no area statement in any trailer, on the official site, in a Newswire post or in a Take-Two press statement we can find.
What does exist, and what changed in 2026, is a relative comparison. During hands-off preview sessions around the extended look, Rockstar’s co-head of development described Leonida as roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map and about three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2, adding that Vice City itself is around twice the size of Los Santos and that the built-up area outside the city dwarfs GTA 5’s equivalent. Reputable outlets reported it. We cite it because it is a dated public statement from a named Rockstar developer — but we are not going to call it a published figure, because it is not one, and it contains no unit of area at all.
Why “twice the size” is not a measurement
Two things make that comparison weaker than it sounds, and both of them are worth understanding because they will still apply on launch day.
First, it is a ratio without a base. “Twice GTA 5” only means something if you know what GTA 5 was, and Rockstar has never said. The figures people quote for GTA 5 come from players measuring in-game distances after release, not from the studio. So a confident-sounding “twice” resolves to “twice an unofficial number”.
Second, map size is a genuinely ambiguous measurement. Do you count ocean? Interiors? Unreachable terrain past the invisible wall? Vertical space, in a game that now has a mountain region? Two careful people measuring the same game can differ by a factor of two depending on those choices. That is exactly why pre-release figures disagree so wildly with each other.
What GTA 5 actually measured
Widely reproduced player measurements put GTA 5’s playable land area somewhere between roughly 48 and 81 square kilometres, depending on whether water and inaccessible terrain are included. The spread in that range is the whole problem in one sentence: it is not that people measured badly, it is that they measured different things.
We quote that range only as context for the comparison people keep asking about. It is a community estimate. It is not a Rockstar figure, and we will not present it as one.
What is actually known about the GTA 6 map
Plenty, just not its area. From official material:
- The map is a state, Leonida, not a single city. Rockstar’s framing places Vice City inside a conspiracy running across the state.
- Rockstar’s site names and now describes six areas: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga. Our everything confirmed guide goes through each one.
- Four Vice City districts are named — Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market and the VC Port. See the Vice City region page.
- Official material shows genuinely distinct environments, from reef and shallow flats to swamp, industrial interior and forested high ground.
- Official material shows higher crowd and traffic density in the city than anything the studio has shipped before.
Density matters more than area
Here is the argument this page would rather make than argue about square kilometres.
GTA 5’s San Andreas was large partly because of empty space: mountain, desert and freeway that existed to make the drive feel long. What official Grand Theft Auto VI material emphasises is the opposite. Rockstar’s own screenshot captions describe a single beach frame containing a sunbather, men walking past and looking, a couple holding hands, a jogger, someone on a phone and two men throwing a football. Another describes an arrest where one bystander takes a selfie and another poses on the patrol car.
A map that is the same area but twice as dense takes far longer to exhaust than one that is twice the area and equally sparse. The developer comparison above actually points the same way — the claim about the built-up area outside the city is a density claim dressed as a size claim, because “built-up” is doing all the work in that sentence.
If you are trying to guess how big the game will feel, density is the variable to watch, and it is the one official material actually shows you. That is our interpretation, clearly labelled. It is not a Rockstar claim.
How this compares with previous Rockstar maps
Restricted to well-known, checkable facts.
GTA 5 shipped in 2013 with Los Santos and Blaine County inside the state of San Andreas. Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped in 2018 with a considerably larger but far less dense world — a useful reminder that Rockstar’s own two reference points for the new comparison are themselves very different kinds of map. Neither ever got an official area figure from the studio.
For scale of a different kind: Take-Two’s fiscal 2026 disclosures put GTA 5 past 225 million units sold-in, which is why “bigger than GTA 5” is the comparison everyone reaches for. It is also why the comparison is so often repeated without its caveats.
The other structural change is vertical. Mount Kalaga is described by Rockstar as a national landmark on the state’s northern border with trails and elevation, in a state modelled on somewhere famously flat. Height is hard to measure and easy to undercount, and it is one more reason a single area number would flatten the interesting part.
How to judge any size figure you see
Ask four questions before you believe a number:
- Where did it come from? If the trail leads to a leak or a datamine, we would not repeat it here, and neither should a figure you rely on.
- What does it include? Land only, or ocean and interiors too? A number without that definition is meaningless.
- What is it comparing against? A “twice GTA 5” claim needs a stated GTA 5 figure, and that figure carries its own 48–81 km² ambiguity.
- Is it measured or inferred? Nobody outside Rockstar can measure a map that has not shipped. Pre-release figures are inferences from trailer geography at best.
What we will do at launch
Once the game is out, measuring becomes possible and we will publish our own figure with the methodology stated: what counts as land, whether water is included, and how we handled interiors. We will also revisit the developer comparison above and say plainly whether it held up. Until then this page will keep saying the same thing, because it is the accurate thing to say.
To explore what we do know, start with the interactive map, the location index, the region pages, our character profiles or the gameplay section. For launch timing see the release date page, for hardware see platforms, for the footage itself see trailers, and for quick answers the FAQ. Remember that our base map is an original illustration, so pin positions are approximate placeholders rather than real coordinates.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the GTA 6 map in square miles?
Nobody outside Rockstar knows. No square-mile or square-kilometre figure for Leonida has been published on the official site, in a trailer, on the Newswire or in a Take-Two statement. The only size statement of any kind is a relative comparison a Rockstar developer gave to creator previews in August 2026, which carries no unit of area at all.
Did Rockstar say GTA 6 is twice the size of GTA 5?
A Rockstar developer did, in a creator preview in August 2026, and reputable outlets reported it. It was a relative comparison, not a measurement, and it did not appear in Rockstar's own published material.
How big is the GTA 5 map?
Rockstar never published a figure for that either. Player measurements commonly land somewhere between roughly 48 and 81 square kilometres depending on whether ocean and inaccessible terrain are counted. Those are community estimates.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2's?
The same developer comparison put Leonida at around three times RDR2's playable area. Again, that is a relative statement reported from a preview, not a published measurement.
When will you publish your own figure?
After launch, when measuring is actually possible. We will state the methodology alongside it — what counts as land, whether water is included, and how interiors were handled.
