GTA 6 Weapons & Combat
What official GTA 6 footage shows about shooting, melee and weapon handling — and why there is still no confirmed weapon list.
On this page6 sections
Combat is the part of Grand Theft Auto VI that has been shown a lot and described almost not at all. Rockstar has published no weapon list, no stats and no design write-up. What exists is footage, plus one useful statement about how the world reacts to you being armed.
Confirmed by Rockstar
Carrying a weapon openly has consequences. Rockstar has stated that player actions now register in the world, using walking down a street with a rifle as the example. That is a small sentence with large implications: it suggests the game distinguishes between being armed and being visibly armed, which the series has historically not done well.
The gameplay footage is real. Rockstar confirmed its extended look was captured in-game on PlayStation 5. Combat seen in it is gameplay, not a cinematic.
Beyond those two points, Rockstar has committed to nothing about combat in writing.
Seen in official trailers and gameplay footage
The weapon types plainly visible across Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and the extended gameplay video are conventional for the series: handguns, shotguns, and automatic rifles, used by both protagonists and by police. Melee also appears — improvised, close and ugly rather than choreographed.
The extended gameplay video is where the mechanical detail lives, and the following have been widely described in coverage of it. We have not frame-verified them, Rockstar has not stated them, and they are logged in our fact-check file:
- Two firearms carried at once with an instant swap between them, rather than a full weapon wheel every time.
- A separate item wheel covering things like face coverings.
- A targeting layer that distinguishes lethal hit points from disabling ones, opening up non-lethal takedowns.
- A slow-motion shooting effect and a kill-cam style flourish.
- Weapon handling continuing smoothly during vehicle chases.
Treat that block as strong reporting on official footage, not as confirmation.
What the trailers establish about tone
Violence in official Grand Theft Auto VI material is fast and consequence-heavy rather than heroic. The bank sequence in the gameplay video has Lucia driving and Jason shooting backwards out of a car, with a police response building around them within seconds. Armed robbery of small businesses appears more than once. The register is closer to a crime film than to a power fantasy.
Our read: combat in this game looks designed to be survivable rather than dominant. That is an impression drawn from footage and clearly not a Rockstar claim.
How this compares to earlier Grand Theft Auto games
Grand Theft Auto V used a weapon wheel with categories, a large purchasable arsenal, and per-character special abilities that included bullet time for one protagonist. Red Dead Redemption 2 used Dead Eye, a limited-carry system where long arms lived on your horse, and a much heavier focus on the weight of each weapon.
The reported two-gun quick-swap and item wheel sit between those two. If the reporting is right, Grand Theft Auto VI is carrying less at once than GTA V allowed and making the choice of what you brought matter more. If it is wrong, this paragraph will be rewritten at launch.
Not yet known
- Any weapon name, class list, or stat.
- Whether weapons are purchasable, and where.
- Whether there is any customisation, attachment or upgrade system.
- Whether either protagonist has a combat ability the other does not — see protagonists.
- How cover, blind-fire and lock-on actually behave.
- Whether melee has any depth beyond a few animations.
- How non-lethal play, if it exists, affects the police response.
How this site will track it at launch
At launch this page becomes a verified weapon reference: real in-game names, where each one is found or sold, and what it actually does. Purchasable locations and any weapon worth finding in the world go straight onto the interactive map under the weapon category, with anything hidden cross-listed in secrets and collectibles.
Until then we would rather publish a short accurate page than a long confident one. For the other half of any firefight in this game, read police and crime; for who is likely to be handing you the jobs, see Raul Bautista.
No leaked material was used on this page. No weapon name has been invented.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a confirmed GTA 6 weapon list?
No. Rockstar has not published one. Weapon types are visible in official footage, but no roster, names or stats have been released.
Does GTA 6 have a weapon wheel?
Reporting on Rockstar's gameplay video describes swapping between two carried firearms without opening a wheel, and a separate item wheel for things like face coverings. We have not verified this frame by frame.
Is there slow motion shooting?
A slow-motion effect during shooting has been widely described from the official gameplay footage. Rockstar has not named or explained it.
Can you take people down without killing them?
Non-lethal targeting has been reported from the official footage, with markers distinguishing lethal from disabling shots. It is not officially confirmed.
Has Rockstar said anything about the shooting itself?
Rockstar has spoken about consequences for player actions — openly carrying a rifle in public draws a reaction — but has not published combat design details.
