Leonida's forgotten coast: cheap motels, shut-down attractions and a new economy that Rockstar describes without flattering it.
On this page7 sections
Port Gellhorn is the region where Rockstar’s official copy is bluntest. There is no attempt to make it charming and no tourism-brochure irony — the studio’s own description of the town is about what replaced the tourism when the tourism stopped. For a series that usually satirises wealth, a region built around the absence of it is a notable choice, and it is the clearest evidence yet that Leonida is meant to have range rather than one register.
What Rockstar’s official site says
The Port Gellhorn panel on the Only in Leonida section is headed with a short, hard two-word line, and its hook states plainly that this is Leonida’s forgotten coast. The paragraph underneath does the work. It says the cheap motels, shut-down attractions and empty strip malls are not going to bring tourists back, and that a new economy has grown in the once-popular vacation spot instead. Rockstar then characterises that economy through three consumer items — malt liquor, painkillers and truck stop energy drinks — and closes by suggesting you get on a dirt bike and hold onto your wallet.
Read carefully, that is a lot of confirmed material for a pre-release region page. It establishes the coast, the decline, the tourist past, the replacement economy, the presence of an opioid problem in the world’s satire, and dirt bikes as a regional signature. It also establishes the region as somewhere you are expected to be robbed, which is a tonal promise more than a mechanical one.
What is still unpublished: any street, district or business name inside Port Gellhorn, any map position relative to Vice City, and any statement about the town’s size.
Landscape and atmosphere in the official screenshots
Rockstar’s own image descriptions for Port Gellhorn describe the exterior of a motel with its vacancy sign lit at night. Two men standing in a room under grow lights, one resting his hands on a shovel and the other holding a baseball bat on his shoulder. A woman leaning into a car window, handing a package to a man in the back seat. A club parking lot at night with lit cabaret signage, a few cars, people lingering by the door and somebody pushing a shopping trolley. And a bonfire gathering where a couple has broken off from the group by a truck.
Those are observations from official captions. Our read: this region’s imagery is almost entirely about transactions and waiting. Nobody in a Port Gellhorn screenshot is doing anything aspirational, which is precisely the point Rockstar’s region copy is making.
What you’ll likely do here
Expectation, not confirmation. Rockstar has published no activity list for the region.
The region description names a dirt bike outright, and dirt bikes turn up repeatedly across the official imagery for the state, so this is a plausible place for off-road and stunt-flavoured vehicles to matter more than supercars. The grow-lights screenshot and the package handover both point at the small-scale end of the drug economy rather than the smuggling scale of the Keys, which in series terms usually means errands, shakedowns and ambushes — relevant to police and crime and to weapons and combat.
Rockstar’s line about holding onto your wallet is the closest thing we have to a warning that the region has its own hostile ambient behaviour. Whether that means pickpockets, muggings, or simply that the people here are less forgiving is not something the studio has explained. Broader context in activities.
Characters tied to Port Gellhorn
Rockstar’s official material connects Raul Bautista to the region. He is described as a seasoned bank robber with confidence, charm and cunning, constantly recruiting people willing to take big risks — and separately as reckless enough that his crew will eventually have to double down or walk away. A forgotten coast is a logical base for a crew that needs somewhere cheap to sit between jobs, though Rockstar has not spelled that link out. The wider cast, including Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, is not tied here by the official bios.
Real-world inspiration
A once-thriving Gulf-side tourist town whose motels and attractions outlived their visitors is a recognisable American pattern, and Florida has many candidates rather than one. Rockstar has not named an inspiration and we are not going to assign it a single real town. What is evident is that the studio is drawing on the strip of the state that never got the postcard, and on the opioid-and-energy-drink economy that followed. More in Leonida vs Florida.
Port Gellhorn locations on our map
- Port Gellhorn Motel Row — motels, oversized signage and half-empty lots, now backed by Rockstar’s own description.
- Port Gellhorn Waterfront Docks — our inference from the name and the official word coast, still marked as speculation because no dock has been shown.
What we’ll add at launch
At launch we will re-pin both entries, replace our descriptive labels with real street and business names, and add the cabaret club, the motels and the bonfire spot as separate locations once they can be found rather than guessed at. We will also settle the region’s position on the map, which is currently a placeholder. Continue to the interactive map, the location index, everything confirmed so far or the official trailers.

Frequently asked questions
What does Rockstar officially say about Port Gellhorn?
The official Only in Leonida section calls it Leonida's forgotten coast, describes cheap motels, closed attractions and empty strip malls, and says a new economy has grown in the old vacation spot — one it characterises through malt liquor, painkillers and truck stop energy drinks.
Is Port Gellhorn on the coast?
Yes. Rockstar's own wording calls it a coast and a once-popular vacation spot, so a waterfront is officially implied even though no specific dock, harbour or beach has been named or shown.
Which characters are from Port Gellhorn?
Rockstar ties bank robber Raul Bautista to the region. Its official screenshots also show unnamed residents, including two men in a room full of grow lights and a crowd at a bonfire.
Are dirt bikes a Port Gellhorn thing?
Rockstar's own region copy suggests getting on a dirt bike there, and dirt bikes appear in official imagery for several regions. How they handle and whether they have dedicated activities has not been detailed.
Is this the same as the "faded resort town" description people repeat?
Broadly yes, and we previously avoided that wording because we could not source it. Rockstar's own copy now supports it directly, so we describe the decline as official rather than as community interpretation.
