Grassrivers

Grassrivers is the region that changed most once Rockstar expanded its official site. For a long stretch after the reveal the only confirmed thing about it was the name. There is now a written description, a tagline, and a set of official screenshots with captions, and together they make the wetlands sound less like scenery and more like the part of the map the game expects you to be nervous in.

What Rockstar’s official site says

The Grassrivers panel on the Only in Leonida section is headed as a welcome to the wetlands, and its hook line calls the region an untamable jewel of Leonida’s crown. The paragraph beneath it is the substantive part, and it makes three claims in two sentences: you never know what is under the surface of this primordial expanse; alligators are the region’s most famous attraction; and there are both deadlier predators and stranger discoveries waiting among the mangroves.

That last clause is the most quoted line on the whole official page for a reason. Rockstar rarely promises weirdness in marketing copy unless something is there. It is also, deliberately, unspecific — so while we think it is a strong hint that the wetlands carry secrets, we are not going to pretend to know what they are.

Rockstar’s character material also mentions the region in passing, and its own screenshot captions confirm that Grassrivers footage includes mangroves, open swamp, piers, airboats and alligators in numbers.

Landscape and atmosphere in the official screenshots

Rockstar’s official image descriptions for Grassrivers are specific enough to be useful. They describe a speedboat running toward buildings raised on piers over the water, with the Vice City skyline visible in the distance. Three people covered in mud posing on an airboat with a dead alligator and a wildcat, one with an automatic weapon propped against his leg and another holding a rifle. A top-down view of two people in an airboat ringed by alligators, one of them aiming a gun at the closest. And a helicopter and two police cars chasing a pick-up truck through the swamp, with alligators in the water and an airboat in the background.

Those are observations from Rockstar’s own captions. Our read: this is not a nature-documentary biome. Every official Grassrivers image has either a weapon, a pursuit or a dead animal in it, which is a very deliberate signal about what the wetlands are for.

What you’ll likely do here

Expectation, not confirmation. Rockstar has not published an activity list.

The obvious one is wildlife. Alligators are named in the official copy and appear in several official images, a wildcat appears in one, and Rockstar’s phrasing about deadlier predators implies the roster is longer than the reptiles. Hunting looks likely given the posed-trophy screenshot, though Rockstar has only ever used the word hunting for Mount Kalaga.

The second is movement. Airboats in official Grassrivers images, plus a speedboat and a pick-up truck being chased through the same terrain, suggest the region has several travel layers that behave differently — which makes it interesting for vehicles and very interesting for police and crime. A police pursuit through water and sawgrass is a different problem from a pursuit on a freeway, and Rockstar has chosen to show exactly that.

Characters tied to Grassrivers

Rockstar has not made Grassrivers home to any of the eight characters it profiles, which is itself worth noting — this is a place people go, not a place the cast lives. Real Dimez are connected to travel out of the city in Rockstar’s material, and the region sits within sight of the skyline according to one official caption, so the wetlands read as the nearest genuinely lawless ground to Vice City. That makes them a natural destination for Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos when something needs to disappear.

Real-world inspiration

A vast, shallow, grass-covered river system full of alligators and mangroves, sitting inland of a Miami analogue, is an evident nod to the Everglades — including the name itself, which reads as a plain-language translation of the idea. Rockstar has not asserted the parallel in its own copy, and the region is not a recreation of any specific park. We look at how Leonida borrows from the real state in Leonida vs Florida.

Grassrivers is the region where our map will change most on day one, because wetlands are hard to guess at and easy to chart once you can fly over them. We will re-pin everything, add the named settlements and waterways as soon as the game names them, and open a dedicated page for whatever the official copy meant by weirder discoveries — as findings, not predictions.
