The real places, industries and news-cycle culture that official GTA 6 material evidently draws on — framed as inspiration, not as a confirmed one-to-one map.

How to use this guide
Rockstar has never published a key mapping Leonida’s regions onto real Florida counties, cities or parks, and it almost certainly never will — the series works by composite, folding several real places into one invented one so that the satire lands without naming a target.
So everything below is evident inspiration: real things that official footage plainly evokes, set beside what the game actually shows. It is not a claim that any region is any real place. Where we push further into interpretation, it is labelled.
Vice City and Miami
The reference is unmistakable. Official footage shows a low, dense coastal city built hard against a beach, with pastel and neon commercial frontage, mid-rise towers set back from the shore, causeways over water, and a street culture that lives outdoors.
The real anchor is Miami Beach’s art deco district — the concentration of 1930s hotels along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue, with their curved corners, eyebrow shades, porthole windows and rooftop signage. It is one of the most photographed pieces of American architecture and it is the single most portable visual shorthand for “Florida” that exists.
Alongside it: the causeway geography of Biscayne Bay, a large and visible Cuban, Haitian and wider Latin American cultural presence, a nightlife-and-music economy, and the particular Miami phenomenon of extreme wealth sitting one block from extreme poverty.
Our read. The 2002 game drew on a cinematic memory of 1980s Miami. The new one appears to draw on the contemporary city, which is a harder target — it is a real place with real problems rather than a stylised one. The Vice City region page and the beachfront strip entry track what is actually on screen.
The Leonida Keys and the Florida Keys
A chain of low islands in shallow, very bright water, reached by causeway, with boats moored and rafted together away from land.
The real reference is the Florida Keys and the Overseas Highway that strings them together — an archipelago running southwest from the mainland, with a marine economy of fishing, diving and charter boats, a culture of deliberate remoteness, and the specific social institution of the sandbar raft-up, where boats anchor together in shallow water and become a floating party. Our Keys sandbar entry is built around exactly that shot.
Not confirmed: no individual key has been named in official material, and the Keys’ working side — the boat yard in official material — is a Rockstar invention, not a real business.
Grassrivers and the Everglades
Wide, flat, waterlogged sawgrass cut by channels, crossed by airboats, with alligators present as ordinary fauna rather than as spectacle.
The real reference is the Everglades — a slow-moving freshwater system rather than a swamp in the popular sense, with sawgrass prairie, hardwood hammocks and a genuine airboat culture used by residents, guides and law enforcement alike. Alligators are common enough in populated Florida to be a routine nuisance call rather than an emergency.
That last fact is the joke behind the trailer’s most-shared image: an alligator walking into a store is funny, and it is also something that genuinely happens. Our Grassrivers region page and airboat channels entry cover the footage.
Port Gellhorn and the Gulf coast
Low-rise motel frontage, older signage, working dock structure, an atmosphere of a place that has seen more prosperous seasons.
The real references sit along the Gulf coast and the Florida Panhandle — towns built on tourism, fishing or a military base, with mid-century motel architecture, hand-painted signs, and an economy that runs hot for a few months and quiet for the rest. Hurricane damage and rebuilding is a permanent background condition along that coast.
See the Port Gellhorn region page and the motel row entry.
Ambrosia and inland agricultural Florida
Flat farmland, straight two-lane roads, distance between things.
The real reference is inland central and south Florida, which most visitors never see: citrus groves, sugarcane south of Lake Okeechobee, cattle ranching on a scale that surprises people, agricultural labour communities, and long empty highways. It is the part of the state that has nothing to do with the beach and contains a great deal of the state’s actual land.
Our Ambrosia region page and the two-lane highway entry are the relevant pages.
Mount Kalaga and the part that does not fit
Higher wooded ground, different light, a forest palette unlike anything on the coast.
Real north Florida does have substantial forest — the Ocala and Apalachicola national forests, longleaf pine, spring-fed rivers, and rolling terrain that is genuinely different in character from the peninsula. What real Florida does not have is a mountain. Britton Hill, in the Panhandle, tops out at about 345 feet and is the lowest high point of any US state.
Our read. This is the clearest evidence that Leonida is a composite and not a map. Rockstar appears to have wanted a high, forested, cooler-feeling region for gameplay variety and built one, real elevation notwithstanding. That is a design choice, and it is a good argument against reading any region as a literal transcription. The Mount Kalaga region page and the forest trails entry cover what is shown.
The culture, not just the geography
The strongest inspiration in the official material is not a place at all. It is the way Florida appears to the rest of the country: as a feed of bizarre incidents filmed on phones by bystanders — wildlife where it should not be, arrests that make no sense, weather, spectacle, people behaving extravagantly in public.
Official footage leans on that hard, presenting much of the state through vertical phone video. We catalogue it as its own device under in-universe phone clips, and it is the single sharpest satirical instrument in the material released so far.
Other real culture visible in official material and worth naming: mud and off-road truck spectacle, which is a genuine organised sport in Florida rather than an invention; boat culture as a class marker; and beach density on a scale that reads as accurate rather than exaggerated.
What we are not claiming
No region here is a confirmed version of any real place. Rockstar has named a handful of Vice City places — Ocean Beach, Little Cuba, the Tisha-Wocka flea market, the VC Port — but none of them is presented as a version of a named real location, no individual key has a published name, and no real brand, business or person appears. And nothing on this page came from a leak — it is all drawn from official footage set beside publicly documented facts about a real US state.

Frequently asked questions
Is Leonida just Florida?
Leonida is an evident parody of Florida, and nobody sensible disputes that. But Rockstar has never published a mapping between its regions and real counties or cities, and Grand Theft Auto has always composited several real places into one fictional one. Treat the resemblance as strong inspiration rather than a lookup table.
Is Vice City meant to be Miami?
Miami is the obvious primary reference — beach, art deco, causeways, Latin American cultural presence, nightlife economy. Rockstar has not said so in this game's materials. The 2002 Vice City drew on a filmic memory of 1980s Miami; the new one appears to draw on the contemporary city, which is a different thing.
Which real place is Mount Kalaga based on?
There is no stated answer, and this is the region where the parody diverges most from geography. Florida's highest point is Britton Hill, at about 345 feet — the lowest state high point in the United States. Whatever Mount Kalaga is doing, it is not reproducing real Florida elevation.
Are the Leonida Keys the Florida Keys?
The resemblance is obvious — a low island chain, shallow water, boats rafted together on sandbars, a causeway culture. Rockstar has not named a real-world equivalent, and no individual key in the game has been given a name in any official material, so every "this is Key West" claim you read is someone's guess.
Does the game use real brands or real places?
No. Grand Theft Auto has always used invented brands, businesses and place names as its satirical instrument. Nothing in official GTA 6 material carries a real company name, and any list of "confirmed real locations" is fabricated.
