The tropical archipelago south of Vice City: casual bars, loaded boats, and some of the most dangerous water in the state.
On this page7 sections
The Leonida Keys is the region where Rockstar’s official material is least abstract. Three named characters live or work there, the studio’s own region copy has a tone and a warning in it, and the official screenshots are full of specific, unglamorous detail. If you want a sense of how Grand Theft Auto VI will feel away from the neon, this is the clearest sample available before launch.
What Rockstar’s official site says
The Keys panel on the Only in Leonida section is headed with a gateway-to-paradise idea, and its one-line hook is that the dress code is casual and the bars are well stocked. The paragraph underneath makes two points. The first is about tone: life in this tropical archipelago is not flashy, it is easy — deck chairs and a drink rather than towers and valet parking. The second is a warning. Rockstar explicitly says the islands sit on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and most dangerous waters in America.
That second half is the useful part. It is a rare instance of Rockstar telling you that a region is not just scenery, and it lines up with the smuggling storyline the character bios attach to the same place.
What Rockstar has not published is any interior geography. No key is named. No bridge, marina, town or sandbar has a label. There is no stated count of islands and no stated road connection along the chain. Any article that hands you a list of named keys is going past the official record.
Landscape and atmosphere in the official screenshots
Rockstar’s own image descriptions for the Keys are worth reading closely, because they are doing world-building in miniature. They describe an iguana walking in front of a mobility scooter while people pass by. A seaplane over the water, with a road bridge linking two islands behind it. The exterior of a beach bar where a man is passed out at a picnic table among empty bottles, a couple is kissing, and other people are drifting in and out of the entrance. Two scuba divers underwater among coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle. And a gathering of boats where people are drinking, jet-skiing, sunbathing on deck and floating on an inflatable flamingo.
Those are observations from official captions. Our read: the Keys are being designed as a place you go to do nothing in particular, which in a Rockstar game usually means a dense layer of ambient events rather than an empty stretch between missions.
What you’ll likely do here
Expectation, not confirmation — Rockstar has published no activity list for the region.
The water is the obvious centre of it. Rockstar’s edition material names a Shitzu Squalo boat, describes it as suited to fishing in a place called Gambit Bay, mentions dolphins alongside it and shows it being pursued by a police boat and a police helicopter. It also lists a Crest Kayak among the vehicles parked at Jason’s safehouse. Between those, the diving screenshot and the seaplane, the vehicle mix here looks less like cars and more like hulls, paddles and wings, and activities on the water — fishing, diving, drifting between boats — look like a genuine part of the offer rather than a single mission type.
Expect wildlife to be part of the texture too: an iguana on a pavement and a sea turtle on a reef are both in Rockstar’s own captions. And with an officially stated smuggling economy and officially stated dangerous water, police and crime in the Keys probably means the Coast Guard as much as a patrol car — which is exactly why Cal Hampton’s scanner habit is more interesting than it first looks.
Characters tied to the Keys
Jason Duval is described by Rockstar as having landed in the Keys after the Army, working for local drug runners and thinking it might be time for something else. Brian Heder is a smuggler from the region’s golden age who still moves product through his boat yard with his third wife, Lori, and who is described as letting Jason live rent-free at one of his properties in exchange for help with local shakedowns. Cal Hampton is Jason’s friend and another of Brian’s associates, and Rockstar says he is happiest at home with a beer, listening in on Coast Guard communications. Lucia Caminos enters Jason’s life from elsewhere, which is what sets the story moving.
Real-world inspiration
An archipelago strung south of a Miami analogue, reached by bridges over shallow turquoise water, with a drinking culture and a smuggling history, is a recognisable parallel to the Florida Keys. Rockstar has not asserted that mapping and neither do we; the interesting thing is how the studio uses it, turning a holiday postcard into a corridor for moving things quietly. More on the parallels in Leonida vs Florida.

What we’ll add at launch
At launch we will replace our approximate pins with real positions, add the named keys as soon as the game names them, and build out the marinas, bridges, dive sites and bars that are currently a single generic pin each. We will also record whether the Coast Guard is a distinct pursuit force, because that is the one mechanic this region’s official description points at hardest. Meanwhile: the interactive map, all locations, the secrets hub and the official trailers.

Frequently asked questions
What has Rockstar officially said about the Leonida Keys?
The official Only in Leonida section describes the Keys as a tropical archipelago where life is easy rather than flashy, and warns that the islands sit on the doorstep of some of the most beautiful and dangerous water in America. Three named characters are tied to the region.
Are individual keys named?
No. Rockstar has not named a single island, bridge, marina or town inside the chain, and it has not said how far the chain runs or how much of it is reachable by road.
Is diving a confirmed activity?
Rockstar's official screenshot descriptions include two scuba divers underwater among coral, fish, an eel and a sea turtle. That establishes underwater environments exist. Whether diving is a free-roam activity with its own equipment and progression has not been stated.
Who lives in the Keys?
Rockstar's bios place Jason Duval there working for local drug runners, his friend Cal Hampton at home monitoring Coast Guard radio, and veteran smuggler Brian Heder at a boat yard with his wife Lori. Brian is described as letting Jason live rent-free at one of his properties.
Is the region based on the Florida Keys?
Rockstar has not made that claim, but an island chain reached by bridges off a Miami analogue is an evident parallel rather than a secret one. We treat it as inspiration, not a one-to-one recreation.
