A scene-by-scene read of the May 2025 trailer — the six regions it opened up, the characters it introduced, and what Rockstar stated about the footage itself.

Ground rules

As with our Trailer 1 breakdown, everything below is split into observation — what is visibly on screen, in our words — and our read, which is interpretation and is labelled as such. No timestamps, because we verified none. No character or place names beyond the ones Rockstar has published.

Context: a trailer released into a delay

Rockstar announced on 2 May 2025 that the game would miss its 2025 window and arrive on 26 May 2026. Trailer 2 followed on 6 May. Our read: that sequencing was not accidental. The trailer had to do repair work as well as marketing, and it does that by being much more generous with information than Trailer 1 was — more of the world, more of the cast, and an explicit note about how the footage was made.

The opening line

Observation. The trailer opens on the words “Vice City, USA.” Rockstar’s own site frames the story the same way: Jason and Lucia have always known the odds are stacked against them, an easy score goes wrong, and they find themselves inside a criminal conspiracy running across the state — dependent on each other to survive it.

Our read. That is, still today, the most complete plot description Rockstar has published. Everything longer that you read elsewhere is extrapolation. It is a two-hander crime story with a conspiracy frame; that is all that is on the record.

Jason and Lucia, rebalanced

Observation. Where Trailer 1 led with Lucia and used Jason as support, Trailer 2 gives both leads comparable presence — together in transit, together in domestic settings, together during work that goes wrong.

Our read. The trailer is selling a pair rather than a protagonist with a companion. That matters for how the game is likely to be structured, though Rockstar has not published a description of a protagonist-switching mechanic and we will not invent one. See Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos for what is actually stated about each of them.

The supporting cast

Observation. This is the trailer that widens the cast. Rockstar’s official site carries short bios for a group introduced here: Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, the duo Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder.

Our read. The spread of that group is the point. A club and label world, a conspiracy-minded outsider, a career armed robber and a boat-yard operator in the Keys are not one social circle — they are four different corners of a state. Rockstar is signalling that the story moves between milieus rather than staying inside one crew. Our pages: Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder.

Places tied to them appear too: the club in Vice City, the record label, a radio and antenna setup and the boat yard.

The state, finally shown as a state

Observation. The trailer moves well beyond the city. There is a bright, low island chain with boats rafted together on shallow water; wide wetland with airboats and sawgrass; a worn coastal town of motels, signage and dock structures; agricultural flatland and straight two-lane roads; and higher wooded ground with a different light and palette from everything else.

Our read. Those five environments map cleanly onto the five non-city regions Rockstar names on its official site — the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga — alongside Vice City itself. We say “map onto” rather than “confirm” because the trailer does not caption its own shots. Our everything confirmed map guide keeps that distinction carefully.

What the trailer does establish beyond argument is variety: the biomes are genuinely different from each other, not a single coastal palette repeated.

Vice City itself

Observation. Dense low-rise blocks near the water, mid-rise towers behind them, heavy traffic, crowded sidewalks, pastel and neon signage, and interiors ranging from apartments to club floors. Night and day are both represented.

Our read. The city looks textured in a way that reads as vertical detail rather than raw footprint — awnings, shopfronts, balconies, people using the street rather than walking through it. That is the observation that makes us sceptical of the whole “how many square kilometres” conversation, which we take apart properly in our map size guide.

Crime, work and consequence

Observation. Robbery, weapons handling, driving under pursuit, boats at speed, aircraft over the coast, and a good deal of ordinary life around the edges of all of it.

Our read. Nothing here specifies a system. You can see that there are police, vehicles and violence. You cannot see wanted-level mechanics, mission structure, weapon wheels, cover behaviour or inventory, and Rockstar published none of it alongside the trailer. The long-form extended look from August 2026 is where systems became visible; the trailers page covers that video separately.

The capture note, and why it matters

Rockstar’s description states that the trailer was captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5, and is an even split of gameplay and cutscenes. Our read: publishers make this claim when they expect scrutiny, and it is a meaningfully falsifiable statement. It does not tell you the frame rate, the resolution, the graphics mode, or whether any shot was captured on hardware running slower than real time — and Rockstar has published none of those. Our platforms page explains why we carry no performance figures at all.

The closing card

Observation. The trailer ends on the date Rockstar held at the time, 26 May 2026. That date has since been superseded; the current one and the full delay history are on our release date page.

If you want the version of this with the earlier trailer’s framing, start with the Trailer 1 breakdown. If you want detail-hunting rather than narrative, the easter eggs in the trailers guide is the right page, and everything we pinned from official footage sits on the interactive map.

Frequently asked questions

When did GTA 6 Trailer 2 come out?

6 May 2025, on the official Rockstar Games channel, four days after Rockstar announced the first delay. Rockstar reported roughly 475 million views across all platforms in the first 24 hours. That figure is a combined social total, not a YouTube-only number, and the two are often mixed up in coverage.

What song is in Trailer 2?

"Hot Together" by The Pointer Sisters, written by Sharon Robinson, credited in Rockstar's own video description. The song is from 1986 and its streaming numbers rose steeply in the days after the trailer, repeating the pattern set by Tom Petty's track in Trailer 1.

Is Trailer 2 gameplay or cutscene footage?

Both, and Rockstar said so. The official description states the trailer was captured entirely in-game on a PlayStation 5 and is composed of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes. That is an unusually specific claim for a games trailer, and it is the publisher's own wording rather than an outlet's interpretation.

Did Trailer 2 confirm the map regions?

The six named areas — Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga — come from Rockstar's official site, published around the same time as the trailer. The trailer shows environments consistent with all of them without captioning each one on screen.

Why are there no timestamps in this breakdown?

Because we have not verified any. Timestamps circulating online are frequently copied between articles without checking, and re-uploads drift. Describing a shot costs a sentence and cannot be wrong in the way a stray number can. We apply the same rule across every page on this site.
